Search and filters

Search

Suggestions are Shopify’s own ranking, not a list you curate. The theme asks for products, collections, and articles matching what has been typed, and draws what comes back. There is nothing to configure per result type.

Turn the setting off and the drawer becomes a plain field. The visitor types, presses Enter, and lands on the search results page.

That fallback is always there: the drawer is a real search form, and submitting it gets the shopper to the results page whether or not suggestions are on.

The small thumbnail beside a suggestion keeps its own fixed shape. Image ratio governs the larger product crops inside the overlay. That is the Featured pieces shelf the drawer shows before anyone types, and the product cards in the as-you-type results. The search results page itself is a grid of ordinary product cards, so it takes Image ratio from Product cards instead.

Note

If you have set a gift wrap product under Theme settings → Gift wrapping, Lapels leaves it out of both the suggestions and the search results page. It is bought by ticking a box in the cart, and a shopper typing “gift” is the likeliest person to be offered it by mistake.

Filters

With the setting off, Apply is the only thing that filters, and that is the safe default: shoppers pick filters in handfuls, and each load is a real page load. Turning auto-apply on with a short wait sends a request per tick and throws most of them away, which is slow on a large catalog and reads as a page that will not settle. If you turn it on, leave the wait at two seconds or longer.

Auto-apply never takes the button away. Apply stays on the panel and always goes at once, so a shopper who has finished choosing does not have to wait out the delay.

Filters and sorting belong to one form, so a single Apply submits both together.

Caution

The filters themselves are not part of the theme. Which filters exist, what they are called, what order they appear in, and how their values are grouped all come from Shopify’s free Search & Discovery app. Set them up under Apps → Search & Discovery → Filters in the admin. Lapels renders whatever you configure there. If a filter is missing or wrongly named, the fix is in the app, not in the theme editor.

Three more filter settings live on the templates rather than here, because they are layout decisions that can differ between a collection page and the search results page. On the Collection and Search results sections you will find Show filters, a Layout select (Sidebar or Drawer), and Swatch filter layout (Grid or List) for filters whose values all carry a swatch, such as Color.
